 Painting Tales: Tuscany. September

Can you taste the Tuscan brightness of September? Honey, a little lazy from the summer—I painted it with recollection and out of longing.

The hills in the foreground undulate in yellow and ochre, bursting with harvest. Thick impasto palette knife dabs—one can sense the ground. A single little white church among the cypresses. To its right, the sunset glows over the terracotta-roofed stone home, rebuilt.

The Tuscan mountains melt away behind them into gentle blue-violet, while above, the sky shines peach-orange, the hue of late September around 6 pm.

I didn't paint a Tuscan postcard. I painted the emotion of being there: stillness, warmth, and timelessness. For me, Tuscany symbolizes harmony between man and earth, surviving for ages. That church, that farmhouse, part of those hills.

It's an original oil on canvas, created in my studio in Ontario, using drawings and emotion from travels, my impressionist technique. I believe it adds Italian light to a Canadian house, particularly when we want the heat.

Collectors say, "I can't picture my home without these paintings."  They are more than decorative. They are the windows you live in.
