This Rainbow Painting Holds a Story That Doesn’t Belong in a Gallery.

How a Single Painting on Canvas Brought Back a Life-Changing Memory.

He stood silently in front of the canvas painting.

It showed a rainbow—simple at first glance, almost peaceful. But for him, it was something else entirely.

At an art fair where we were exhibiting Elena’s art on canvas for the first time, one visitor couldn’t take his eyes off a single artwork. After a long pause, he began to tell us a story that none of us will ever forget.

A Flight That Should Never Have Ended This Way.

The memory took him back to Africa, during a humanitarian mission with the Red Cross.

Just half a mile from the runway, a jeep burst out of the dense bush. Machine-gun fire erupted without warning.

The rough terrain made it impossible for the shooters to aim precisely. He turned inside the aircraft cabin, saw his wife Jane already on board, and pushed the throttle forward. There was no time to hesitate.

Using maneuvers drilled into him during his years of military aviation, he accelerated and took off. More jeeps appeared. The gunfire intensified.

The only escape was upward—into the clouds.

A light motor aircraft is flying above the African safari zone.

Hiding in the Sky.

Flying into the cloud cover worked, but only briefly. Clouds never stay closed forever.

He knew that sooner or later, they would have to cross the front line. And when they did, anti-aircraft fire was almost guaranteed.

Below the aircraft, a winding, muddy river reflected the fading sun. Mist floated above the water. Forested treetops rushed toward steep riverbanks before dissolving into savannah scattered with wild plants.

Beneath the aircraft's wing, a river shimmers with reflective clouds.

It looked like an original oil painting—beautiful, distant, and unreal. It resembled something you might see in a gallery, rather than from the cockpit of a plane under fire.

The Moment Everything Changed.

Through breaks in the fog, herds of antelopes appeared at a watering hole.

And then, suddenly, two things happened at once.

A collage with an aircraft in the middle of a circle of rainbows.

A perfect rainbow circle—not a semicircle, but a full, glowing ring—formed on the horizon. It's colours were unlike anything he had ever seen.

At the same time, explosions from machine-gun and anti-aircraft fire lit up the clouds on both sides of the aircraft.

He gently maneuvered the plane toward the center of the rainbow, where the front line appeared beneath it. Without thinking, he began to repeat a prayer his grandmother had taught him as a child.

Despite the chaos, he felt an overwhelming certainty: nothing would happen to them.

Safe Landing, Final Flight.

They landed safely.

The Red Cross medical team rushed forward to unload injured patients transported from a neighbouring country. It was the final leg of their journey—and his last flight.

Their return to Canada was planned for the following day.

He embraced his wife, and together they walked toward their tent, grateful beyond words.

Why the Painting Stopped Him Cold.

Back at the art fair, he finished his story without ever taking his eyes off the canvas.

Elena’s painting was inspired by the Dominican coast. Yet the semicircle of the rainbow on the canvas instantly brought him back to that flight—into the heart of a ring-shaped rainbow, suspended between danger and faith.

That is what art can do.

A painting doesn’t just decorate a space.

Sometimes, it provides access to moments that transform our identity.

Has art ever brought a memory back to you?

Have you ever seen an emotional art piece that suddenly reminded you of something extraordinary?
Have you ever encountered a place, a moment, or a feeling that you believed had faded away?

We would love to hear your story.

See you soon,
Nik
